Reminder: We’re meeting on the last Sunday this month, as the Point Loma Playhouse is presenting Wally’s Cafe at the Point Loma Assembly on July 22, 2pm. This month we’re excited to feature a great panel of speakers on the upcoming ballot initiatives focused on the site of the current San Diego County Credit Union Stadium – AKA Qualcomm Stadium, Jack Murphy Stadium and originally San Diego Stadium. Whatever the outcome this November there will be a major change to Mission Valley, and San Diego. Panelists Natalie Kessler, Southwest Strategies LLC, SDSU West Haley Peterson, Intesa, SDSU Mission Valley Joe LaCava, No on Soccer City Each of our panelists will give a 10 minute presentation, followed by 5 minutes for questions on their segment. Mar 18 – Do Citizens Get Hurt More in Soccer or Football?

This month’s meeting is a week earlier than usual to accommodate the inclusion of the Point Loma Assembly in the San Diego Architectural Foundation Open House on March 24-25. Joe LaCava will present arguments in opposition to the SoccerCity Initiative scheduled for the City of San Diego November 2018 ballot. The citizen’s initiative proposes a sale/lease to private investors and redevelopment of city-owned land including the Qualcomm Stadium and the former Charger Training System. Mr. LaCava is a Democratic Party activist and prominent advocate of community participation in the city’s planning process. He graduated from San Diego State University and is owner of LaCava Consulting. He is the former chair of the San Diego Community Planners Committee, the umbrella organization to the city’s 42 community planning groups, and was briefly a candidate for San Diego City Council in 2016. He currently serves on the eBoards for the Democrats for Environmental Action and Citizens Coordinate for Century 3 (C-3). Nov 26 – Community Choice Energy + Short Term Vacation Rentals

We have two very important topics on this month’s agenda – that both affect our quality of life in San Diego. Community Choice Energy Community Choice Energy promises to take us closer to energy freedom, lower energy bills and more local clean energy. The Mayor recently asked the city to develop a business plan to allow for separation from SDG&E, but also provided the utility a chance to offer an alternative to maintain its monopoly. Sophie Wolfram, Policy Advocate with Climate Action Campaign, will discuss climate change impacts and why cities are ideally suited to lead the global fight to reverse climate change. Her talk will cover the key strategies in San Diego’s Climate Action Plan, including Community Choice Energy, and address San Diego’s implementation efforts since the plan was adopted in 2015. Short Term Vacation Rentals Tom Coat approached us to talk about why he’s supporting Barbara Bry’s initiative on STVRs.
